Who is it that inspires you?
Brandon Stanton, founder of Humans of New York, asked this question of Vidal Chastanet who attends Mott Hall Bridges Academy in the incredibly run down area of Brownsville, Brooklyn. Without hesitation Vidal answered “Principal Lopez. When we get in trouble, she doesn’t suspend us,” he said. “She calls us to her office and explains to us how society was built down around us.” The response went viral and was shared more than 145,000 times. Three days later, Stanton raised money for the school and ended up raising a massive $1 million in a week.
This video (created by Atlantic) shows just how special Principal Nadia Lopez is and why it is so important that we have people in our life who raises the bar of what we expect from ourselves. Those special people who make us believe that anything is possible, and who show us that we are masters of our destiny and that we are not permanently anchored down by our social status, our neighbourhood or our lack of wealth.
We are all capable of greatness but sometimes we need a spark to ignite us. Principal Lopez has ignited the children of Brownsville, Brooklyn.
Who inspires you? Maybe it is time to thank them.
